Why and what this Independence for?
Hmm, today is the Independence Day and yes this came for 66th time in last 66 years. But if we will review our past and look into all these days at least for which we become the witness, we can see that we have celebrated (rather I will say observed) it in many different manner. As life progress, our spirit and reason behind this day change. Today morning I was just wondering what importance the day really has in our life, I mean really is this day has any importance other than remembering those legends who have sacrificed themselves to give us this special occasion (special is always not in positive, it sometimes work as negative too).
If we will think about the first or second Independence Day which we were witness and which we can remember, that was the standard one or two ultra-primary school celebrations. If we think about that day, if anybody can remember, I certainly will say that we used to be so anxious about this day only to get chocolates and biscuits and most importantly a day leave. It used to be very exciting, school head master will host the flag and then all school children will sing Jana Gana together, then have a locality round up with slogans and patriotic songs. Seniors will shout some slogans and we used to recite those. Once the round up over, will eagerly wait for the chocolates and biscuits. I am not saying that we used to get chocolates on this day only but there is a special importance of these chocolates and biscuits in our life. Though we used to have milk early in the morning in our home before going to school but still we will fight to get one more chocolate on that day. This is just because we were child then. We were not in a matured stage to celebrate this from our heart or even brain. We were just flowing in the source of things happening and we have been guided this way only by the school, by the society, by the family even.
Again if we will go back to the late primary stage or at least towards sixth or seventh standard, I can say that we were bit matured as compared to the earlier stage. Reason, we were having a lot of chapters on our independence heroes and their fight against British to get this possible and we can feel the importance of the day. Again what is the importance at that time, as a bright student we need to prepare ourselves for speech else the other bright students will take the prize away. So we choose specific topic or specific person which can be easily available in any essay book or we take help from our favourite teachers to draft a speech, we try to memorize the whole page or two and prepare ourselves to present in front of the school audience. Try to present the speech in such a way as we have the person in us about whom we have prepared the speech. This is just to keep ourselves in the top of the list so that nobody else can take away the prize from us. And yes in this maturity this sensibility does not come automatically in our brain rather we have been prepared by our teachers or guardians in this way, they guide us no no rather they force us in the name of a good speech to present ourselves like this. So we do the same and keep ourselves busy in this preparation and in back side of our mind we forgot what and why exactly we do celebrate this day for. If the school has NCC, they try to prepare themselves to compete with other schools. In some areas there are different sports competitions arranged by the larger community, where students participate and compete for prize. Again in this early maturity stage we have witnessed two to three independence days and we celebrated for prize, prize and prize. So we have celebrated this from our brain, coz we utilized the same to play a good game, get a good results in the sports we participated, memorize the speech and the one who does not participate in any competition they do participate who can clap more for his/her well-wishers or who can shout a lot the slogans during the city visit of the students. Oh I have forgot to mention about the preparation for songs, when song and dance comes into picture, girls are the priority. They prepare themselves to rock the Independence stage with some patriotic songs which they sing and some also dances in some patriotic tracks. But again I will say we have crossed at least nine to ten independence days in this way. Teachers taught us the same thing in history classes and they give us some inspiration speeches about the past how people sacrificed themselves to get the freedom for India. They discuss about Mahatma Gandhi, Subash Bose, Chacha Nehru, Ballabh bhai patel, etc, etc.
Again the same thing happens in our early college duration also. We celebrate the same school Independence Day in a bigger way. Here we have more students and more teachers. We are having bigger conference room. As we become more matured, we participate in bigger competitions, speech competitions extend to group discussions and debates. Yes as we participate in bigger competition, we prepare ourselves in a bigger way; we take help of internet, libraries and prepare our brains in a bigger way to reach our bigger goal that is bigger prize in front of the bigger audience. So again we celebrated our 11th and 12th Independence Day utilizing our much matured brain and guided by much bigger brained lecturers and sources. Till now nowhere in life society or environment taught us the importance of the day in a right manner and which can build a better and responsible citizen in us.
Then when we were in graduation, this day become mostly like a holiday, I mean like Sunday. In school we were mandated to go to school (either of the case we were not matured enough to understand the importance of the day so we were anxious to celebrate). In 12th standard we had to attend as we were in our early college time and we were feared to lose any marks in practical papers in exam. As our lectures prepared a lot for their speech so to listen them we had to go. And also there was some anxiety to celebrate the days till the 12th standard as we were getting prizes. But when we entered in graduation, here life taught us to go that way where we can make our earning fruitful and somewhat till the graduation completes, we come into the flow of struggle and start realising the real life and in the source of time, we become more matured and we gave us the status to take our own decision, that means we have started to identify social life, social culture. Nobody is going to force us anything, we can realize ourselves what to do what not to. At least in this age we think the same (not talking about the society thinking about us). So when this day comes we start to analyse about this day, its importance on the current socio-cultural life, how importance this independence day on India after it got freedom, whether it was right to have our freedom the way we got and mostly whether this freedom (which we are having right now) really justify the sacrifices made by the great men and women down the line of last 200 years. As I mentioned earlier, we have given ourselves the status to think independently (as this is the only thing, I can say the Indian freedom gave us), we decide that our society did not get the freedom the way it should get, it is not being monitored correctly the way it should have been, the system is not running in the right way, the way it should be, etc etc. We see beggars still there outside begging for their livelihood. Poverty is still there we can say now in a bigger manner (if you will take the line of 36rs per day, then the count will be negligible). Social, rather democratic leaders leading their lives in a luxurious way at the same time farmers are doing suicide in their constituency. We think randomly and all negativity thoughts come to our mind which current India is facing. As this is the age is of young blood, if we start thinking about negativity, it dominates the small amount of positivity there in the atmosphere, which we should have utilised as the source rather. And we again start passing the day thinking negatively and it takes away the importance of the day in our life.
Today we do celebrate Durga pooja, Diwali, Ganesh Pooja, Raamzan, Eid, Christmas, etc etc where we spend a lot money and resources and in fact it brings a lot of positivity in our life though we know this is nothing to do directly in our life. Ram killed Ravan, we did listen it from our ancestors, Durga is the divine power of energy, and this also we have learnt from our ancestors. So without having any practical clue about this, we celebrate with enthusiasm and extra spirit of life but why the same becomes the reverse one when it comes to Independence Day or Republic day? We do celebrate of Krishna Janmastami, celebrate the birth of Jesus with a lot of celebration, we do gather our family in time and spend lot money on that though we don’t have a clue on that. But when it comes to Bhagat Singh jayanti, Subash Bose birth anniversary or any legends birth or death anniversary who has sacrificed their lives for this India’s freedom, which we have their blessings with us rather we can say our elder generations were the witness of the same.
Here I don’t have the intention of hurting any people or religion or even I am not meant to compare between the festivals we celebrate and we don’t. Here I just want to put my points why these days gradually losing the importance in our life even though thousands of lives were been sacrificed for the same. We have always had our celebration of different festivals and for that we never thought from our brain and nobody forced us to think in a specific way and again these festivals are nothing to do with the lives we lived before independent and post independent. But when Independent day comes, people change their line of thinking. Different people look in different manner, different age group look it in different manner and again we are not unitedly celebrating this. Most importantly the way we have been groomed for this day and the way we looked this day in different manner in different stages of our life, it loses the glory. This is what individual thinks about.
When this comes to governing and machineries (so called constitution), which rules the country from the very first govt to the current one, they have never let any individual citizen of India feel that yes after getting the freedom, something changed and people are living good lives, there is no poverty, no corruption, no crime, no violence, no unemployment. Rather if we will think now, currently we are living a riskful life. When India was ruled by British there were no human rights or citizen rights, people were like slaves and being ruled by the masters. So at least people were set in their mind that they will fight against the masters who were treating them as slaves and they will send them out of our motherland. But now the situation is different. Though there is a constitution, human rights, citizen rights we are still being living the life of passive slave. Then also people were doing rebellion, now also people are doing the rebellion. Then they were being arrested, now also the same. Then we had poverty, unemployment, crime, violence, torture and now we also have the same and in a larger manner. Then at least as the country being ruled by a centralised and dictator were not much corruption but now this word become a much familiar even in individual level this is familiar. The main difference is that then we knew people who are not from our land and they only intended to loot our land were doing the same but after freedom in our democratic process, the people from our own land chosen in election from our individual votes are looting us and this is the much pathetic and bitter truth of life, which is happening in an organized and constitutional manner. So then we could fight against the people who are not among us but now with whom we will fight, with us as we have elected those people to parliament, with our constitution which has not enough strength to execute them or with the freedom fighters who has prepared this constitution lacking long vision. Whatever you think, gradually the situation and the power source which are sitting at the top, they are compelling the lower class and middle class families to live in such a way that either we will not get time to fight against them or if we have time, and if we will fight against them, they will not listen or the people who neither have strength to fight nor have patience to wait, will do suicide.
Higher class, the so called power sources, leaders of political parties, political rulers, Industrialists, bureaucrats, top level executives and many more lead their own life with the utmost luxury like the then British and Jamindaars whereas the lower class and middle class families still live their lives as slaves or small employees like in British rule. So I don’t see much difference between pre Independent and post independent days. Yes this will be a very big statement to say by me who is not at least a drop of the huge sea of people living in this country. But this is we cannot avoid, in the 66thIndependent Day also our beloved (he has to that’s why he is there in the top position) Prime Minister repeated the same words of development which our then beloved PM Mr. Jawahar Lal Nehru delivered in the first Independence Day speech. So in this 65 years, if the developments committed by the top person of the country not yet completed, then the one which were not committed (count is much higher than the committed one) cannot even come to the list. So here every citizen has this question in mind, why and what this Independence for?
